The defense of Egypt meant the defense of the Suez Canal for the British. The maritime routes of the Empire from the east went through the canal. While the Germans were unable to interfere, the addition of the Ottoman Empire to the Central Powers changed that.

Britain transferred the garrison of regulars and replaced them with Australian and New Zealand troops. These troops were sent to training camps near the canal for mutual protection.
